Imagine this...you are mediating peacefully in your apartment, letting go of distracting thoughts and feeling relaxed in your body. Yet down the road, there is a meeting of like minded fascists working out ways to divide and conquer the world with their populist lizard brain politics of distraction. Now, two days later you discover this fact and stop for a moment and wonder 'should I devote so much time to internal self-reflection when every day the world gets weirder, harsher and less loving'?
My answer is no. I still need inner reflection time, however I can always fall into the trap of overdoing the cult of achievement (I am a Happier Fitter Brighter person in order to be more productive and less stressed and a better consumer). I need more time for OUTER reflection. How can engage with society to help negate the bitterness that is starting to creep into our culture.
So is the solution getting mad, bad and dangerous to know? Well that's generally been a proven failure unless pulled off at some massive scale of popular rebellion. I believe that the best path is to get a grip of the true state of the world as it is right now. That is, I need to accept that the world as we know it is finished. Allow grief for the things that have been destroyed. Don't hang to some notion that everything will work out fine if I just keep on self-improving. I cannot hang onto some nonsense about 'hope' through good deeds, 'just being in the now' or magical thinking that the 'universe will provide for us' if we just wish hard enough. (God I wish I didn't waste my time with 'The Secret' all those years ago).
Breathwork (or re-birthing if one must call it that) is a great therapy in that it can give you a sense of internal re-calibration with the truth of YOU plus the truth of the culture around you. This includes allowing grief to surface and be expressed. This gives then a solid foundation on to which to see the world as it really is. Take action from that place, not the pack of cards of the achievement cult.
Take home message: DESPAIR ARISES IF ANGER AND GRIEF ARE HELD DOWN IN THE BODY AND PSYCHE. TAKE ACTION TO RELEASE THESE FEELINGS. THEN TAKE ACTION IN THE WORLD FROM THAT PLACE.
That's all for now. Phil Morey Canberra
